Collect for a Summer Still Life — Josephine and Koi

Just a small prayer for these late summer days in the Northern Hemisphere.

God who wakes goldfish from pond mud
and settles on her usual bench
the ninety-eight year old woman without teeth
who feeds them a hot dog bun,

warm these your children
with the deeper gold of August sun,
and shine indiscriminately
even on others so discontented
they don’t now remember
the summer
taste and feel of peace. amen
