Prayer from Elijah for storm victims, for veterans

God of Elijah, you are not heard
in hurricanes —
Sandy or Bolaven or Isaac or Katrina.

You are not heard
in earthquakes in Japan
or Christchurch or Haiti.
You are not heard
in tsunamis, tornadoes, nor’easters.

You are not heard
in the fire of heart, brain and belly
we call PTSD in active soldiers
and veterans who serve
countries around the world.

God of Elijah,
allow us to be your raven people –
handing out those five dollar blankets
hygiene kits, clean up buckets,
and water and food.

Help us listen to the still
and smallest voices – children.

Teach us to leave an empty chair
and open door,
not only at Passover, but always –
expecting you to send a guest,
perhaps one who has worn a uniform,
or one with a wound.
Amen.
