Advent Candlelighting — Second Sunday, the Sunday of Peace

We are in the season of Advent. Throughout this season I will post on the preceding Monday resources for Advent that can be turned into an Advent Wreath Candlelighting liturgy for the Sunday that follows. First I will share the original pieces. Then I will prepare them for worship. Some lines will be added or taken away, some words changed. Shape, order and line length may be adjusted. I want to share these wonderful resources but also suggest ways to adapt materials so that they can be more easily experienced with others.

nutre nuestros pensamientos, afirma nuestras decisiones.

promesa, realidad, alfa y omega,
abrázanos con tu bendición y danos tu paz.

Advent of Peace
Advent of peace and hope,
light of harmony and abundance,
Life that proclaims life,
accompany us in our work today and every day.

Tender bud of new dreams,
seed of eternity,
sage of infinite wisdom,
nourish our thoughts, affirm our decisions.

Sun of justice and of grace,
warm flame of forgiveness,
clear gaze of mercy,
wrap us in the security of your presence.

Announcement of good news,
Evangelist of pardon,
Word that creates and restores,
speak to our hearts, affirm our faith.

God with us,
Father and Mother from the beginning to the end,
promise, reality, alpha and omega,
embrace us with your blessing and give us your peace.
Gerardo Oberman, Argentina

Bendición del Otro mundo posible / Blessing from Another Possible World

That every day: God may cradle you in his arms. That God’s tender voice lull you to sleep, and that day and night God may guide your way.
That the Jesus of the manger, humble and alone,
may continue giving us hope and consolation.
May the spirit of love, of life and peace, continue raising us up and giving us life.
May we continue living life at God’s side, because this way life has meaning, passion, courage, justice, forgiveness and dignity
Because another world is possible, because there is a good life,
because now is the time to share it.
And because, in doing all this, we can turn the course of history.
Joel Eli Padron Ibanez, Church of Peniel, Mexico

The Second Week in Advent

Reader 1: Our readings this year for the Advent candles come from all over the world. This morning’s reading comes Latin America from Argentina and from Mexico.

Advent of peace and hope,
light of harmony and abundance,
Life that proclaims life,
accompany us in our work today and every day.

Reader 2: Lighting the first Advent Candle:  This is the candle of hope – we light it to bring hope in all places and at all times. Our readings last week were from the hopes of Africa, and we remember them this morning in our hearts. In so many ways are our hopes the same.

Sun of justice and of grace,
warm flame of forgiveness,
clear gaze of mercy,
wrap us in the security of your presence.

Sol de justicia y de gracia,
calida llama de perdón,
transparente mirada de misericordia,
envuélvenos con la seguridad de tu presencia.

Reader 3: Lighting the second Advent candle  This is the candle of peace – we light it to pray for peace within people and between people, and between human beings and all of creation.

God with us,
Father and Mother from the beginning to the end,
promise, reality, alpha and omega,
embrace us with your blessing and give us your peace.

promesa, realidad, alfa y omega,
abrázanos con tu bendición y danos tu paz.

Reader 1: Let us bless one another:

May God cradle you in God’s arms,
May God’s tender voice lull you to sleep,
and day and night may God guide your way.

May Jesus of the manger, humble and alone,
continue giving us hope and consolation.

May the spirit of love, of life and peace,
continue raising us up and giving us life.

May we continue living life at God’s side,
because this way life has meaning, passion,
courage, justice, forgiveness and dignity,
because another world is possible,
because there is a good life,
because now is the time to share it.
and because, in doing all this,
we can turn the course of history.
