Call to Prayer for the First Sunday in Lent from Aotearoa / New Zealand

Penny Guy of Aotearoa/New Zealand begins our journey into the Lenten season by calling us to awareness of all travellers. This Call to Prayer is printed first as Penny contributed it to Gifts in Open Hands and then as it might be used for a longer and more intentional responsive prayer with times of silence and meditation or intercession.

Call to Prayer for Lent

One: Let us pray

As we start on our Lenten journey we remember travellers
Those who are travelling by choice;
for work, to see friends and family,
to experience new cultures and see the world.
Those who are forced to travel;
to leave their homes because of fire or flood or war
Those who must leave their countries
due to fear of violence
and hope to resettle in another country
For all travellers, we ask your blessing

All: Lord, give them strength for the journey

One: As we start on our Lenten journey we remember travellers
Those whose journey involves giving something up
in order to deepen their relationship with you
Those on a journey away from self-destructive habits
such as dependence on cigarettes, alcohol or drugs
Those who haven’t chosen to give things up
but have had them taken away from them;
their belongings, their homes, their freedom
For all travellers, we ask your blessing

All: Lord, give them strength for the journey
