Prayer for a Winter’s Day from New Zealand

Lynne Frith from Grafton, Auckland, sends this opening prayer for worship or personal devotion for a winter Sunday / day. The words warm our hearts in the southern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere we may bookmark them for another month, and recognize what creatures we are of weather and how season is one of our simplest diversities.

A thanksgiving prayer for a winter day.

On this winter’s day
We are thankful for the small things that lift our spirits-
The warmth of another’s smile or embrace,
The glimpse of the sun through the clouds,
Freshly brewed coffee,
Newly baked bread,
Hot soup.

On this winter’s day
We are thankful for glimmers of hope;
For acts of kindness that tell us
We are not alone
In our sorrow,
In our suffering,
In our uncertainty.

On this winter’s day
We are thankful for
All that stirs us into life;
For funny stories and laughter,
For music that sets us dancing,
For words and wisdom that inspire us.

On this winter’s day
We are warmed
By the beauty of this place in which we live,
By the company of family and friends,
By our passion for justice and peace.

May the thoughts of our hearts,
the words of our mouth,
 the work of our hands,
and all that we do with our lives
speak of grace and truth
as we seek to live in the way of Christ. Amen.

    The ladies of my very elderly Afternoon Fellowship will be treated to this tomorrow.

    Thanks so lovely — may you feel much warmth.

      Thinking of you tomorrow – if you need a diversion think of my ladies in their 80s and 90s acknowledging the Queens Birthday by drawing royal corgis (adapted from the Beetles dice game).

  4. Maren says:

    Oh, my goodness, the image is so in my mind! Your Elijah piece is my Thursday post — now I am just hoping they do not delay me for a nasty spider bite (on the back of the knee that will be operated on of course)

    What a lovely prayer, and so appropriate for our winter months. I am sharing it with the residents of our senior residential facility, here in the cold north of Wisconsin (United States). Thank you!
