“Pacha Mama” from Argentina, Prayer of Our Savior, Prayer of the Earth

Gerardo Oberman’s prayer “Pacha Mama” is the prayer of all of us, for daily bread and forgiveness, for hallowing and for-evermoring.

I share it first in the original Spanish, then as translated and adapted into its poetry as a version of the Lord’s Prayer, the Prayer of Our Savior, by me and finally in the more literal translation (from which I adapted/prayed) by Katie Fiegenbaum. Best may it be found in your heart, in your community of faith.

Pacha Mama que habitas el Universo
porque con amor lo pariste
y con generosidad lo sostienes.
Santificados sean los mil nombres con que te llamamos,
nombres que apenas logran contener
la fuerza de tu gracia materna.
Venga a nosotros y a nosotras

tanta riqueza, tanta bendita diversidad…
Perdónanos, si es que aún puedes perdonarnos,
el egoísmo y la avaricia,
por los bienes que acaparamos
cual voraces bestias sin corazón.
Perdónanos tanto descuido y desprecio
por la casa común que habitamos,
por la tierra que ultrajamos,
los mares y ríos que contaminamos,
los cielos que oscurecemos.
Perdónanos las miradas que ignoramos,
las manos que escondemos,
los gritos que ignoramos
y los silencios en que nos camuflamos.
Tuya seguirá siendo la Tierra;
tuya será siempre la capacidad
de hacer todo nuevo,
de recrear la esencia de lo que vive y late,
y tuya la honra que te debemos
tus hijos y tus hijas,
hoy y cada día.

Pacha Mama (Mother Earth)

Pacha Mama who inhabits the universe
because with love you gave birth to it
and with generosity you sustain it.

Hallowed are the thousand names we call you,
names that can scarcely contain
the force of your maternal grace.

Fullness of Life come to us – men and women,
as you dreamed in the first creating breath,
and we have forgotten.

Your will of abundance be done,
on land without owners,
by shared seeds, large table,
common humanity,
by peace and harmony.

You offer us daily bread, hot and plentiful,
so no one will go hungry.
You give us the sun and the rain,
milk and wine, corn and rice,
the sounds of all that live and breathe,
so much richness, such blessed diversity…

Forgive us — if you still can forgive us —
our selfishness and greed,
the goods we hoard, our heartlessness.
Forgive our carelessness and contempt
for the common home we inhabit,
for the land we spoil,
the seas and rivers we pollute,
the skies we obscure.
Forgive the glances and cries we ignore,
the hands we hide, and the silences
of our camouflage.

Yours is the Earth that continues;
the power to make all anew,
to recreate the heart that lives and beats,
and yours the honor that we owe —
your sons and daughters
today and all days, every day. Amen

Bring to us

Forgive us, if you still can forgive us,
our selfishness and greed,
for the goods we hoard
what greedy beasts without heart.
Forgive our carelessness and contempt

Forgive the glances we ignore,

the cries we ignore
and the silences in which we camouflage ourselves.
Your Earth will continue to be;
you will always have the capacity
to make all anew/everything again,
to recreate the essence of what lives and beats,
and yours the honor that we owe
your sons and daughters
today and all days/every day. Amen
