Advent Prayers

We begin Advent and we do so with a gift! Rev Susan Langle, Trinity of Episcopal Church, Claremont, New Hampshire sent these beautiful Advent prayers. They are apt for congregations following different practices, but for those who use the Advent candle themes of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love, this is a particularly beautiful prayer for hope.

I am “hoping” that those who read here will share Advent resources — some one thing you have written that you would like to share with others and that you are willing to have others use freely in worship bulletins.

Prayers of the People – Advent

Leader: O Lord, we wait in darkness.  We long for the light.  We need you.

People:  Come Lord, and refresh us.

Leader:  O Lord, some of us have broken hearts.  We are lost.  We wait in darkness.  We need your comfort.

People:   Come Lord, and refresh us.

Leader:  O Lord, we are stuck in a world of false promises, easy fixes, cheap merchandise and superficial relationships.  We long to see through the veil to all that is true, and good. We need your help to let go of distractions and diversions and hold on to each other in love.

People:   Come Lord, and refresh us.

Leader:  O Lord, some of us are hungry.  There is no food for our children.  There are no reserves in the cupboard.  We need your helping hand.

People:  Come Lord, and refresh us.

Leader:  O Lord, some of us are weary.  We have been in the struggle too long.  We cannot go on.  We have been handed more than we can carry.  We need your strengthening support.

People:  Come Lord, and refresh us.

Leader:  O Lord, some of us are afraid.  We are besieged.  We are battered.  We are hiding from the forces that would twist us and break us.  We need your protection, your shield.

People:  Come Lord, and refresh us.

Leader:  O Lord, some of us are hopeful.  We look out toward the growing light.  We hold on to the children dear to us.  We look forward to your coming, with the wonder of unprepared parents awed by a first born son, with the joy of a triumphant child on her first bike ride.  We wait, yearning to love and be loved.  We need you to remind us of your abiding presence.

People:  Come Lord, and refresh us.

Concluding Collect:

Creator of the stars of night,
 your people’s everlasting light;
O Christ, Redeemer of us all,
we pray you hear us when we call.   AMEN

Here’s one thing for Advent. It’s based on the Advent Carol “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. If you can use it great if not that’s okay too!
