A New Creed from the United Church of Canada, in several languages

Called the New Creed, a much beloved Affirmation of Faith in the United Church of Canada …

A New Creed

We are not alone,
we live in God’s world.

We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others
by the Spirit.

We trust in God.

We are called to be the Church:canadian-maple-leaf
to celebrate God’s presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.

In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us.
We are not alone.

Thanks be to God.

In Swahili
Imani Mpya

Hatuko pekee,
Twaishi katika Dunia ya Mungu.

Twaamini Mungu :
yule aliye umba na bado aumba,
yule aliye kuja ndani ya Yesu,
neno kafwanywa mwili,

Mungu yuko nasi.
Hatuko pekee,

  1. This reminds me of a program Krista Tippett had up on her site recently, one in which she had interviewed Yaroslav Pelikan about his book on creeds, and he spoke of them as continual works of people newly gathered or newly excited about their faith, for whom the creeds of others were insufficient, for they were not gathered as part of some old experience, they needed to name their own. He read a Masai creed that was the most exciting I have ever heard, and he and Tippett remarked on its unusual phrasing. I keep meaning to try to find the book, which must be out of print now –

If you find that creed please share it here. I find it also interesting that “creed” has taken on such a negative backward-looking tone that affirmation of faith — in essence the same thing — is the go-to language.
