Prayer for Napa

Not God of the earthquake,
but God in the earthquake –

not found in shaking and breaking homes,
but in the quick smile
of the first responder,
in the neighbor who finds a doll
you left at her house
and hands it to you
as you watch the gas fire burn,
in the triage nurse,
whose efficient is gentle.

We pray to One who always
makes a miracle in a cup of grapes,
and today holds people
of wine country
in the palm of purpled hands,
and says to the ground
and hearts of people …

be still, and know that I am God.
