Prayer for children who cannot breathe

Friday, December 5, 2014

God, we pray for children
who cannot breathe –
for the ones with asthma,
COPD and allergies,

and for children
who cannot breathe,
because they are so afraid of those
supposed to protect them,

and for children
especially the teenagers,
so angry and frustrated
by racism and injustice
that even their words of protest
choke in their throats.

God, we pray for this country
to catch its breath,
to catch its spirit —
and sing a wild reversal,
a magnificat.
Amen.
