As I continue mourning the children of Peshawar, but also for all children who have died this year … this is my prayer for today but also an improv on a traditional spiritual.
I wonder as I wander out under the sky
why, after the manger, still children must die,
and poor ordinary parents are left for to cry.
What use are the angels up there in the sky?
If Jesus had wanted for just one true thing –
no curly haired sheep nor the gold from a king,
but for the upheaval his mother did sing …
and he didn’t get it – death still has its sting!
I no longer wonder, for I do know why –
Jesus the Savior was born for to die.
So we know he’s with us when grieving comes by –
and we’re never alone here – out under the sky.
