How Jesus made parables

Remember when Mom lost the coins —
turned things upside down,
sweeping up dust, wood shavings,
and one of my sandals?

I think this time
I’ll tell the story with one coin.

People can roll away in pairs,
in cliques and gangs and turn-mean mobs,
but it is as one alone
that they feel most lost.

I really think the story needs
a punch line
bigger than a good broom,

and my Mom can party.

That woman can really magnify
a song,
and laugh and dance —
learned it long ago from the angel
who found her.

I’ll put in angels, too.
