Lenten Reflections on scripture – the Temptation

Mark 1:12-13

The Spirit drove Jesus out into
the worlderness
for forty days,
and he was tempted —
not three-point sermon tempted —
but tempted by all the temptings
we are ever likely to know.

And it was hard, but Mark reminds us
Jesus was not alone —
he had the company of
wild animals and angels.

Jesus was with the seaside sparrow,
the passenger pigeon, javan tiger,
dromedary… perhaps the
Mountain Gorilla, Forest turtle,
Giant Panda, Snow leopard, Tasmanian Devil —
and they were a comfort and a beauty.

And when he foresaw
the temptings of human beings
that would make these and so many others
extinct or endangered,

Jesus must have been tempted …

We are so very lucky that
angels were waiting,
to help him cope with the terrible loss.
