Lenten reflection on Scripture — more Habakkuk

God is my strength, who makes my feet like the feet of a deer, and makes me tread upon the heights. (Hab.3:19)

For the beagle,
a deer
is the ultimate object of awe.
We stand and gaze,
often allowed quite near,
in the dawn
behind the high school
in a rough woodland scrub
of hikers and drug deals.

Receding snow exposes
for canine curiosity –
rabbit tracks, one red mitten,
Hopkins’ shook foil
sparkling in early morning light
in spite of taco-bell …
and fresh hoof prints.

The dog stops,
and the hunting bay catches
in his throat for wonder.

I pause, too,
aware that my life
does not always tread the heights,
but for just this one moment
I and something holy
are on the same path.
