Lenten reflection on scripture — A writer’s confession

Exodus 20:17

God, so many commandments
are relatively easy for me …

It’s this tenth one
I stumble against so very often.

I swear I am not jealous
of Shakespeare, Jane Austen,
or Maya Angelou,
and I do not covet my neighbor’s
book on church growth,
space opera, cozy mystery,
memoir or fan-fic …

but I confess I wish I’d written
“Dog Songs”
instead of Mary Oliver.81H-pJBlvsL._SL1500_

I wish I had paid attention
to all my dogs,
their small exquisite revelations
of the holy,
and then written poems
about their ordinary paws.
amen

As a “song writer envy sufferer”, I greatly sympathize. Guess it’s God’s way of keeping me patient and humble and focused. And blessed, too.

  2. Gail Orlando says:

This makes me want to get the book, Dog Songs. Looking forward to reading it. Gm

I can loan it to you!
