Lenten reflection on scripture — Romans 13:11

Romans 13: 11
Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers …

Now is the moment to wake from …
hibernation,
all you frozen frogs,
those who feel like
skunks or bats,
ground squirrels, deer mice,
prairie dogs, hedge hogs,
turtles, under a shell,
buried in mud,
or stretching, grumbling bears.hedgehog2

(Pick your personal parable,
I’m hedge-hog this year.)

Now is the moment,
you who have used
deep God-given survival strategy
to get through
some winter of the heart,
for now you know …

sap is nearer to us now
than ever in our lives before –
sweet, spring-wakened,
creative sap –
flowing free from warm days,
after cool nights,
but needing
to be boiled down
before it is thick enough
to be shared.

Maple syrup is harvested without harming the maple trees by hanging buckets on trees. At the point in winter’s-end when the nights are still cold but the days warm the sap flows. To turn this into maple syrup takes boiling down somewhere in the ration of 40:1 — rather like poetry.
