Earth Day or Earth Celebration Liturgy

      Call to worship (Mt 10:40-42)

One voice: Welcome to our service of worship.
When we welcome one another, we welcome Christ.

Response: When we give a cup of water to a single child,
we welcome Christ.

One voice: When we protect the aquifer for children yet unborn,
we welcome Christ.

Response: When we keep mountaintop removal mining slurry
from Appalachian streams, we welcome Christ.

One voice: When we save the water used for fracking,
to grow strawberries for a kid’s cereal, we welcome Christ.

Response: When we dig the village well or protect the rainforest –
tree by tree, rain by rain, we welcome Christ.

One voice: Welcome to our service of worship.
When we welcome one another, we welcome Christ.

Response: When we give a cup of water to a single child,
we welcome Christ.

Responsive prayer: (Psalm 8)

Leader: O God, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

People: Your glory — light-years old in galaxies,
is also the waking cry of infants,
the “twinkle, twinkle” song of toddlers.

Leader: You are near as Kevlar against enemies,
you silence those who seek revenge.

People When I turn to Hubble and Urthcast,hubble_crab_neb-lg
to live-stream the nebulae of your fingers;
what are human beings that you are mindful of us,your earth-castaways that you notice us?

Leader: Yet you make us little lower than God,
graced with glory, lit with imagination.

People: You give us responsibility for the well-being
of precious palm-fuls of your creation;
you put our feet on the path of care
for domestic and wild animals,
birds of the air, fish of the sea,
and all sea creatures – shark and dolphin,
seal and eel, whale and oyster.

Leader: O God, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
