Matthew 5: 10-11 for Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church

Blessed are those who are persecuted
for righteousness sake,
and for the sake
of being a welcoming church,
and for the sake
of God’s beautiful palette
of brown and black skin,
and for the sake
of a history of sorrow,
and for the sake
of faithfulness in prayer –
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven …
too soon,
oh, yes, too soon.

Blessed are you when you are reviled,
persecuted and shot down –
Cynthia, Susie, Ethel,
DePayne, Clementa, Tywanza,
Daniel, Sharonda, Myra.

You rejoice now and we weep,
for so was persecuted
Jesus Christ,
whose resurrection love
and gentle fingers
have closed every bullet hole.
