Yosemite

I travel to Yosemite
in spite of skeleton trees
blackened
by the rim of the world fire,
in spite of waterfalls
drought-thin
from lack of snow melt.

I say to my questioning friends –
no, I am not a tourist.
I am a pilgrim
going into the arms
of el capitan and half dome
to learn from the earth

how to be a survivor.
