Improv on John 14, for the first anniversary of Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri

Do not let your hearts be
untroubled.
Believe in God and remember
all of God’s children.

In God’s house are many rooms,
and Michael Brown is in one of them –

not because he was the first
African-American person
betrayed by American policing
to be called news,
not because he has been mocked
and discredited,

but because Jesus Christ
has prepared a place for him.

And because of Michael Brown …

the lonely way
from the Middle Passage
to slavery to jim crow
to black bags in jail cells,

and the truth
that black lives matter,

and the life,
of every child of God,
will be held sacred,

in the name of One who promised
never to leave us orphaned.
