Responsive Prayer for Climate Justice

This prayer has been written as a prayer action for faith leaders at events in New Hampshire during the candidates visits in advance of the New Hampshire primary. I wrote much of it, then took in some more ideas and edited it, but it is the “heart-work of many. Please feel free to use it in any way and adapt it as you need or local conditions suggest.

[Voice 1] We pray for minds and hearts open to issues of climate justice, God of all creation…

[All] Hear our prayer.

[Voice 2] We pray for safety, well-being and new hope for the poor and vulnerable, those most adversely affected in health and employment conditions by climate change and fossil fuel extraction. God of all creation.

[All] Hear our prayer.

[Voice 3] We pray for those harmed by fracking, mountaintop removal coal mining, natural gas pipelines, offshore oil drilling. God of all creation…

[All] Hear our prayer.

[Voice 4] We pray for the earth damaged, for creatures endangered, for water polluted and diminished by the massive consumption of fossil fuels, God of all creation…

[All] Hear our prayer.

[Voice 5] We pray for children now living, and those yet to be born to a heritage of spill, slurry and sludge, of cancer and hunger, of fossil fuel driven disparity in economic status and the loss of beauty. God of all creation…

[All] Hear our prayer.

[Voice 6] We pray for the recognition by political leaders of the reality and severity of climate change, and of the harmful and unsustainable consequences of fossil fuel extraction. God of all creation …

[All] Hear our prayer.

[Voice 7] We pray for the commitment of political leaders to act boldly, both to ease suffering in affected communities, and to transition swiftly toward a just and compassionate future. God of all creation …

[All] Hear our prayer.

[Voice 8] We pray for minds and hearts open to issues of climate justice, God of all creation…

[All] Hear our prayer.

  1. Thanks for this, wise, well-worded, and very helpful litany. I regret that I will not be able to attend the Earth Justice Conference, as I had made plans before that was announced to go to NYC for the New Yorker Literary Festival that weekend. I hope there will be more of these conferences, and some good follow up materials – maybe more of yours!

  2. Maren says:

Sounds like fun. I will be blessings animals that day myself. A big weekend with much goingon.
