Veterans Day, 2015

“One Day Only …
Veteran’s Day Doorbusters”

I see it online,
flyers in the newspaper,
ads on the television.

And I think –
maybe it isn’t enough—
one day only
to remember
all that training for doorbusting,
the risks and fears,
the hopes
and long lonelinesses,
the connections made
between one another,
the separation from family,
the losses
of limbs and friends.

One Day only …
and all the rest of us,
the rest of us noncombatants
faced with veterans
from all the armed services
of all the countries
in all the world …

should learn to knock,
and ask,
and seek to understand.
