December 12, 2015 … Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day)

O Guadalupe
Mary in a tattoo, in a snow globe,
painted on a beer can –
a church wall, an alley wall
or a motorcycle leather jacket –
you can be anywhere.

O Guadalupe,
Mary who speaks Nahuatl,1531_Nuestra_Señora_de_Guadalupe_anagoria
you can speak to me
in whatever language I need to hear.

O Mestiza,
in turquoise, stars, and
a full-body halo
who in every generation
lifts up the poor by singing,

and puts roses with your own hands
into the tilma, the hoodie.

O Guadalupe,
come into our own time
with symbols that touch us,
perhaps not
#standing on the moon,

but still asking the same question
“Am I not here,
I who am your mother?”
