Sunday, December 20, 2015 … O antiphon for traveling mercies

O Hitchhiker on the highway
where there will be singing,
where sorrow and sighing flee away,

come to wilderness that does not blossom,
the dry lands that are not glad,
and strengthen, like sweet prophecy,
every weak hand,
feeble knee, fearful heart,
jackal-haunted mind.

Come to the Philippines
flooded after Typhoon Melor,
to Norway in the Svalbard avalanche,
to Syrian migrants on a raft
and Guatemalans in care
of some coyote
baking in an Arizona truck,

and come with traveling mercies
to so many this week
who will travel
in busses and airplanes,
on highways and railways,
underground and uber
to be somewhere that feels holy
for Christmas Day

Come to us all
as we travel
to some Bethlehem inside.
