Balm in Gilead — a song for Martin Luther King Jr morning

Based on the spiritual … based on Jeremiah … based on hope …

There is a balm in Gilead to heal and to console.
There is a blessed community that loves until it’s whole.

Black lives hang in the balance and white folk turn away.
Rise up and tell the children — that dream is for today!

Till all the body cam’ras show hope on every face,
and hands are raised in witness, and guns are in disgrace.

There is a balm in Gilead to heal and to console.
There is a blessed community that loves until it’s whole.

Sometimes we feel discouraged, and think our work’s in vain,
but those who’ve gone before us revive our hearts again.

If we cannot preach like Martin, and our churches still are flawed,
we will live our lives in caring for every child of God.

There is a balm in Gilead to heal and to console.
There is a blessed community that loves until it’s whole.
