Prayer for La Loche, Saskatchewan

For those mourning four who died yesterday
in school and home,
and those shot and in the hospital,
for those mourning all the suicides
of these recent years,
for those mourning the hopelessness,
the fears, the addictions,
the sorrows of this small town –

we pray to the finder
of lost sheep, the one
who scrabbles under bed and table
for a lost coin,
and who knows that there are fish
when the net goes deeper,

the one who came late,
and, oh, we are angry at the late,

the one who comes late
but calls forth the Lazarus among us,
while teaching the rest
how to lever stones
from a too-tombed community,
how to unbind those
who need the love of all.

So sad that such things happen but words are needed to bring hope – these word-drop pictures give balm to lessen the sting of tear-drops.

Chii-miigwech. Most appropriate and very sensitive.
