Making history this morning (in Portsmouth)

A strip of woodland behind my house
separates us from the high school
and, as long as my children
crossed the graveyard
and made the treeline
by the time to bell began to ring,
they were in class in time
not to be tardy.

This morning in that high school
Bernie Sanders is going to endorse
Hilary Clinton for President.

I see them in my heart – sprinting,
trying to make a difference
for America
with the best each one has,
and I hope they are not too late.

They are making history this morning
in Portsmouth.

Of course, the real history
in that high school
happens morning by morning,
week by week, year by year —
each student, each teacher,
each hope for the future

not of one country, but the world.

  1. Wise and witty. I needed this. These two old students have been class clowns, honor rollees, and today, prom king and queen. For all their flaws, they are wiser and kinder than their opponent. May they reign. Let it begin in Portsmouth!

  2. Maren says:

Prom king and queen — I love it!

  3. Return power back to the people!

  4. Maren says:

Absolutely. Though the process of doing so is so obscured in this country.
