For those who mourn in Quebec we pray,
for the right to pray and the right to pray in safety we pray
… and we work and march and stand in vigil.
For the great weeping across Canada
we pray and we share.
For the dangerous xenophobia of the United States
which may encourage violence
in other places
we commit ourselves
not just to condemn but to change —
neighbor by neighbor,
child by child,
argument and standing witness,
letter, patient explanation,
study group about Islam’s true meaning,
But mostly this morning,
for those who mourn a parent, a child,
a holy place broken, we pray.
