Mistaking the winner

And Jordan Horowitz, producer of “La La Land,” said,
I’m sorry there’s a mistake.
Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture.

And there was disappointment,
the way there was
last Thursday night at Poetry Out Loud regionals
for the eight people not going to state finals,

also the sculptor who never gets
juried status,
the dancer in the corps de ballet,
the short story writer
with a drawer of pink slips.

Of course, there was celebration
for the creative team of “Moonlight,”
three regional poetry readers,
authors, painters, sculptors, quilters,
performance artists
who receive great applause.

That is true, but also this,
winners are everyone who creates –
the Nanowrimo novelist
sharing pages with one family member,
the slam poet
too introverted for many votes,
the child making a collage for grandpa,
the grandpa making a collage
in the memory loss unit,
the dancer only on Mardi Gras.

Horowitz also said, I’m going to be
really proud
to hand this to my friends from Moonlight.mardi-gras-beads

All artists are winners.
The true mistake
is not being proud of us all.
