Prayer of illumination for the International Women’s Day Strike

God, they are standing there,
loose from their pages and all in red –

a persistent woman
who would not let the attorney general alone,
a pushy woman who needed health care
and grabbed for the healer’s robe,
a sex worker who made sanctuary
and hung her red ribbon,
a mother so fierce for her child
she contradicted Jesus Christ himself,
a young widow who loved
her mother-in-law more than home,
a woman with a disability
who was allowed to stand up straight,
a Corinthian woman who spoke out
till cranky Paul told her
to go ahead but cover her hair,
a Thyatiran immigrant
who started a church with ex-cons,
and several Marys
who changed the world.

God they are standing here –
loose from their pages and on strike.

This is wonderful, powerful, marvelous. But you left out the poet woman who grabbed her tambourine to lead her sisters in song at the victory over Pharaoh-then taught the song to her brother. Oh Maren/Miriam we are so grateful for your songs

  2. Maren says:

    Yes, we all need tambourines!!!!

  3. Thanks for bringing all these marvelous women into this movement –

  4. Maren says:

You are welcome … can’t say it is technically a prayer of illumination but it was fun!

  5. LL says:

    And they persist!
