Affirmation by Undocumented Immigrants in the United States

Larry W. Trent shares this poem by Yosimar Reyes, who is a person living in the United States without legal documentation.

We be people without a number
fill out applications with made up digits
We show up to work
We be grateful you give us a chance
To show you what we can build
We be people that know you exploit us
People that leave your greed to be faced by god
Our dignity is not tied to our struggle
Amidst poverty we make magic
Send our kids to college
How proud we are of the little we have
How proud we are
we make do with the little you left
We hold on to the fact that one day we will see heaven
One day god will be just
You will get what’s coming to you
And we will gain what for so long we have deserved.
