Prayer for illumination for Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:1-15)

God, part of me hopes
no one will notice two donkeys.

It’s probably a textual problem –
Jesus asking for the jenny and her colt
and the story that he rode them both
down the path of cloaks
and waving branches into Jerusalem.

Except I think Jesus knew
then and now
that people come with colts.

Whenever our lives are loaned
to something holy or sad,
we untie as well
our children and our hopes.

For those children and hopes
are going to carry
for many years coming
whatever it is we choose
to lift, balance,
celebrate, betray, weep.

Not all our stories name them –
but they walk
the paths we make.
