An Icon for St. Petersburg

The icon is a window,
an image of the eye and heart
whose perspective never allows me
to remove myself,

whose lineage of strokes
prayed and painted
exactly the same way
across the centuries reminds me
of our shared humanity.

By a broken subway train,
angels sit on the station platform
at the Technological Institute
among the wounded and the dying,

and they are as traditional and golden
as in any orthodox church,
and we are there, too.

We never worship an icon,
but we are called into it.
