Oath of Enlistment

(This is how I have always heard these solemn words and I am stunned by the rash desire to limit them expressed hastily today by the President. The text of the oath concludes this post)

They, being who they are,
gay or lesbian, transgender,
non-gender conforming,
do solemnly swear,
taking their lives in their hands
in a way that few other Americans do,
including many elected to office,

that they will support and defend
the Constitution of the United States
including all of the rights
won by those who have come before them,
against foreign enemies,
and, sadly enough, domestic ones.

They will bear true faith and allegiance
to everything our country stands for,
not changing who they are,
but offering their true selves
to the greater good, our good.

And they will obey
those placed in authority over them,
as those themselves truly serve
that Constitution.
They will live for the sake of others
with danger, disruption of family,
and the risk of death,
while expecting gratitude and care,
from the rest of us
through the years of their service
and all the days of their lives,

so help them, and help us all,
God who made each and every one.

This is the standard text of the oath of enlistment for all branches of the US military: “I, (state name of enlistee), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
