December 14, Prayers for Newtown, Connecticut

God, this is Christmas Present —
another December
when the tinsel shines as tears —
for those who loved
Charlotte and Daniel,
Avielle and Benjamin,

who sat under a star
with Allison or Noah,
baked cookies
with Caroline or Jessica,
sang Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
with Grace or Emilie,
decorated a tree
with Catherine or Chase,

who opened presents
with Dylan or Madeleine,
and stockings
with Jesse or James or Jack,
watched the Grinch
or read the Polar Express
with Olivia, Jacqueline or Ana,

and who listened to a story
read by Rachel or Dawn,
painted or cut snowflakes,
led Anne Marie or Lauren,
by Mary or Victoria.

This is Christmas Present –
a visit to the heart by each of these,
and from Nancy and from Adam,
and from more than two hundred
school related shootings
since that day at Sandy Hook.

God, this is Christmas Present,
five years later –
a time to say – no more. Amen.

(from A Christmas Carol. The ghost of Christmas Present, “If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, the child will die.”If our shadows remain unaltered, so many more children will die.)
