Advent — December 17, 2017

This week we turn now to the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come who shows Ebenezer Scrooge the possibility of the death of Tiny Tim for the want of his intervention with kindness.

God, your pointing finger moves
to write warnings on walls
forgiveness in the dust,
and hope in the trajectory of a star.

It always rests on a child —
a child in a manger,
a child with a crutch,
a child who is bullied, hungry, hurt,
a child who flees to safety,

a child who wants to wake up
and find a toy under a tree,
and an earth still intact.

Help me recognize that the finger
is pointing at me,
for acts of simple kindness
and a commitment to the long journey.
