Advent — December 23, 2017

(“But he was very light to carry, and his father loved him so, that it was no trouble, no trouble.” Emily Cratchit speaking of her husband Bob and the death of her son Tim in one vision of the Ghost of Christmas Future)

Emmanuel, it is heavier, far heavier,
when folks avoid the name
at Christmas
of those who have died,
as if that will make things easier
for the ones who grieve.

None of them were perfect,
nor none of us.
But always it is true
that love is lighter to carry
when others recognize
a shadow sits on our shoulder,

and it is a season
when there are extra wings around
and tears reflect the star.
