“Follow the man with a water jar,”
Jesus said.
That is a queer thing to say,
in a country where women carry water.
Ever since that time,
we follow the outsider to find
a guest room for Jesus.
“This is my body is broken for you,”
Jesus said,
and this is also the bread
I dip into the bowl
of the one who will betray me.
This is the cup I pour for all of you
and the cup I drink
with one who denies me
and all of you who will run away.”
Behold the sacrament of the scattered,
the meal for any willing to come,
willing to eat,
willing to leave confused and singing.
