Prayer for children, remembering Kemerova

I pray for families grieving children and parents
killed at a movie theatre,
watching “Sherlock Gnomes.”

I pray for the kindness of friends and neighbors,
the success of all those who vigil
and the Gethsemane weeping of God.

And then I wonder – who am I
living in another country altogether
to be so concerned for the safety of children
in Winter Cherry mall,

for children are far from safe in America,
and surely this is true –
“locked in” or “lockdown” should not be
words ever heard by children?

And they are all our children, all our children —
refugees in Eastern Ghouta,
students in schools of the United States,
mall goers in Kemerova, Siberia.

Amen is a beginning , not an end.
