Prayer for Yemen

God, I pray all week in sorrow
for boys killed in Yemen,
their holiday shattered by death,
for their reception in Jannah,
for friends continuing in fear and pain,
for the parents’ desperate loss,
for a world cheated of a future
enriched by one
who may have become an poet,
another a mathematician,
another the wisest of imams.

Today I confess
that my nation made this bomb,
supplied this bomb
so that it could target a schoolbus.
We have brought death
and fear and grief
and lessened the future.

In the world’s sorrow,
we are responsible.
Teach us to change what we make,
how we sell, whom we befriend,
whose tears we cause.
