Remembering John McCain, 1936-2018

Tonight I give thanks for
the uprightness
this man represented
serving a party with which
I so often disagreed,
but believing in reaching across
that “aisle” to form coalition
and to solve problems.

He weighed with integrity
rather than self-interest,
each of his votes,
spoke out on issues
of health care and torture,
of immigration, campaign finance
and the Iraq War,

and kept on trying
to make this country the home
he longed to return to
during the more than five years
he was a prisoner of war.

Senator McCain believed
what he said, and lived
what he believed.

God says — it is always well done,
when one is good and faithful.
