Prayer of thanks and sadness at the death of George H.W. Bush

God, we give you thanks for George H.W. Bush,

who celebrated his ninetieth birthday
by parachuting out of an airplane,
who loved so tenderly
the feisty sweetheart
who made us America laugh,
and worked that all could read,

who joined with Bill Clinton
to ease the suffering of Africa and Asia,

who served on a local vestry,
loved family and mourned always
his daughter who died so young,

who jogged between holes
when he played golf
to get some real exercise,
and famously hated broccoli –

who was private person, political leader,
and your child, our brother.

We give you thanks, God, for this man,
and his return to Barbara and Robin,
and we ask for comfort
for those who mourn him.
family, friends, and all citizens,

and that the “kinder and gentler” way
of making nation –
he spoke of
but could not maintain —
might be in his honor and name
tried again in the country
he served in war, served in office
and loved so much. Amen.
