World AIDS Day, 2018 — Improv on Psalm 137:1-6

By the rivers of many tears
there we have sat down
and remembered those we loved
who died of AIDS.
For thirty years we named this day
and hung up our quilts.

For thirty years we called
out countries, one by one,
where HIV and AIDS
take the most creative among us,
make orphans of children,
rip holes in families.

And we turn away those who say –
“isn’t all that over yet?”

Know your status — is this year’s song –
this is the holy song of Advent’ eve.
If we forgot you, AIDS
let our hearts wither.
Let our tongues cling silent
to the roof of our mouths
if we do not remember to ask –
have you been tested?
if we do not demand that
in this truly —
all the world should be enrolled.
