Improv on Matthew 2: 16-18

We are all herods – none, no, none of us
are the innocents,
we are those who consider love to be a trickery,
we are infuriated by the potential danger
of the presence of children,

we are the killers of Felipe, of Jakelin,
of others whose names
have not made headline news.

Which Christmastide story
shall we read this year?
Behold —
the one with all the mirrors,

and the voice
of mothers and fathers
in wailing and lamentation –

and God weeping for the children
refusing to be consoled
