God of the backyard tree
and the beach at the end of the subway line,
arroyo, pine forest, orange grove,
the protected kauri, the national park,
zen sand garden in a nursing home,
and, in places where stars cannot be seen,
the moonrise through windshield,
hospital window, bars,
we are blessed by places in nature
where we find peace.
For all of these, we give thanks and praise,
and ask for this blessing —
the reminder to seek them out
when life comes unraveled.
And we pray for creation as well —
victim of the violence
of climate change and pollution,
the waste of resources,
poisoning of air, water, land,
fracking, mountain-top coal mining,
exhaustion of arable soil.
Turn around our hearts and minds —
in repentance and a willingness to change,
as we rejoice in the earth
and heaven and nature, nature, nature — sing.
