Sunday, December 22, 2019 — Incarnations of Love — Hanukkah

O Holy One, this is love —
latkes and dreidels and sufganiyot,
(that’s doughnuts to me),
gelt and gifts and games,
and certainly lighting the menorah
in a season dominated
by big pine trees.

But mostly love is oil for a day
that lasts for eight
or for however long I need it,
and how that means
that there will be enough courage
for hiding in the hills,
for facing addiction or grief,
chemo or leaving a home
that is full of violence,
or depression
that desecrates the things
that are a sanctuary in my life.

Surely this is my neighbors’ tradition —
eight candles and Shamash —
but it is also a light for my path. amen.
