Holy Saturday Prayer for Yemen

God, help us to be
harrowers of this hell,

where babies are dying,
children are dying,
adults are dying

of acute malnutrition,
shattered infrastructure,
civilian-directed bombs
in an ongoing six years of war,

and of a world
where each country focuses
on its own pandemic woes
misquoting Jesus
“Yemen is always with us.”

A mother weeps –
it is Mary, Maryam binat Imran,
and every mother.

You are there,
a medic, a deliverer of aid,
in the deepest, hardest place
in all the world

on the way to resurrection. amen

  1. Dear Maren, I do not know how you manage to be aware of so many of the dark and pain-filled places in this world we share. I am grateful for your faithfulness to seeking out, listening and then forming words which both describe and offer hope. Come quickly, Jesus – to those who suffer and to us, who must trust that awareness is the first step toward making a difference.

  2. Maren says:

Thank you, Jacqueline. I try always but I felt called this Lent to lift these up particularly, for my own spiritual path to write prayers so of the moment they would ever be used again and to bring those (like myself) who live in the United States out of our focus on our own news and into focus with the world. It has been a challenge and a number of the prayers have come, like the gun tragedies and storms have come within our boundaries. I am so grateful to you for your words.

  3. Thank you, Maren. You have a wise eye to discern and name the hells of Earth.

  4. Maren says:

For just one day … perhaps that is the most perfect theme for the days on the way to Ascension.

  5. Maren says:

and I went back, realizing that I had not thumbs up-ed it!
