(I live where container ships come and go. Two of our three bridges raise and lower and we complain about being late, rarely thinking about waking to this news.)
Holy One, you who bridge
over troubled waves and smoother waters,
we pray for those who are searching
for six more construction workers,
still unfound,
as well as those possibly in cars
in the collapse of the Key Bridge.
We pray for comfort
for those who witnessed the tragedy,
especially those on The Dali,
and in gratitude for those who risked life
to stop automobile traffic.
We pray for those who travel this way
every day, or every time they go on vacation,
or who just know the bridge is there,
when they need it,
comfort for their sudden fear,
their sadness and their stifling
of embarrassed anticipation
of long inconvenience,
And we pray for the planners
of the reconstruction here,
and all those who will turn now
to safety care for bridges in many cities.
amen.
