The Difference between Church and the Kentucky Derby

(with a shout-out to Brian Hernandez, Jr. and Mystik Dan)

Church is never about a sliver of winning.

Nose to nose is how to run the race,
every time, all the time,
though sometimes a church is barely visible
through the dust clouds of many hooves.

Have you been to a church fair?

And the excitement of a photo finish?
The truth is there’s not so much cheering
and the joy of the finishing post,
red with its white center,
is exactly the same
as the many joys of long training.

In other words … the poinsettias and lilies
are no better than the backstretch.

Some of us are front-runners
and some of us are closers,
but nose to nose is the best of all,

going from the church hill down.

to all the world.
