I share here some prayers from the newly revised Volmoed Retreat Centre prayer book sent to me by Isobel Degruchy. You will find the introduction and then some selected prayers for Wednesdays when the theme is justice and peace. I live in the United States where it is a national election year and I am so desperately aware of our need for justice and peace and for willingness to reach across the world for those who would so teach us to pray. At the end is a Prayer for Africa, which is prayed each day with the Prayer of our Savior and the Volmoed Prayer. This could be a prayer for any continent, for any nation.
God our Father and Mother,
We thank you that you have called us
out of a chaotic and broken world
into your encircling arms,
where we find peace and protection.
We thank you that you are Lord of all,
and that you have conquered evil.
Help us to see this in the midst of life’s contradictions.
May your rule of justice and peace
become a reality,
so that the whole world gives you praise. Amen
Lord, we praise you for your glory and power.
We acknowledge that you are Lord of all
and have conquered evil:
yet daily we are overwhelmed with images
of evil holding sway; of violence,
corruption and oppression,
leaving suffering and misery in its wake,
and we doubt and become fearful.
Open our eyes that we may see you at work in our world,
Open our hearts that we may believe in your love.
May our voice praise you
and our feet walk in your way of justice and peace, Amen
Let us humbly confess our sins:
God of justice, goodness and mercy, You made us in your image,
so we long for justice, yet we fail to practice it;
we long for goodness, while acting in dubious ways,
we ask for mercy, but keep grudges.
Forgive us and restore us.
May your image settle deep within our very being
so that justice, goodness and mercy become
not only what we long for,
but what we embody day by day, Amen.
Assurance of Grace as the leader of worship pleases.
Lord God, forever faithful and loving,
You said that peace-makers would be blessed,
yet they are so often ignored or even attacked.
Strengthen their hands, Lord,
Give them your spirit that they may inspire others.
Help us each one to be peace-makers
in whatever way we are able.
May peace begin to spread
like showers of refreshing rain,
bringing blessing and growth.
May peace come to all our hurting world.
O prince of Peace, come and reign. Amen
Christ stands before us, and peace is his gift,
Peace as the day begins,
peace in the heat of noon,
peace as the light wanes,
his peace at all times in all places. Amen
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all evermore. Amen. Hallelujah!
